Wrath James White — Interview Wrath James White Interview by Angela Bodine Angela Bodine (AB): First of all, please introduce yourself. How would you describe yourself to someone who has never heard of Wrath James White? Wrath James White (Wrath): I would say that I’m a writer, a horror author, an extreme horror author.

I write sick, scary, violent, sexual stuff. I write the terrifying and the erotic, and often both at the same time. It’s funny, for many years, when asked to describe myself, I would answer without hesitation: “I’m a fighter, a kickboxer.” Now that I’m older, too old to fight, being a writer, a father, a husband, that means more to me than my years as a fighter.

I still train fighters. I can’t completely abandon the sport I devoted sixteen years of my life to. But that’s no longer how I identify myself. Now, I’m just a big guy who writes extreme horror and can still kick ass when necessary. AB: The adjectives I would use to describe the underlying themes of your writing are: unapologetic, real, disturbing, and honest.

There’s a lot of meat to be found under all the gristle and blood (no pun intended). I’m curious how you construct your stories. Do you build your plots around the themes, or vice versa? Wrath: I definitely build my plots around the themes. My stories are hypothetical situations arguing whatever idea I am trying to get across at the moment.

That’s a difficult way to write because of the risk of being too polemic, of creating wooden characters who are there as little more than straw men to be sacrificed to illustrate my own point of view. In other words, it’s difficult not to turn every story into a propaganda piece. I think I’ve gotten much better at that though. I use to worry about it a lot, but now I think I’ve found the right balance. AB: What’s your favorite part of being a writer?

Your least favorite? Wrath: I hate writing, but I love to have written.

Writing means tuning out of reality and ignoring friends and family for long hours. Writing is solitary, which makes it necessarily selfish and that’s hard on your loved ones.

I can share the finished product, but not the process. During the process, I need to go inside myself, which means ignoring everything and everyone else. But holding that book in my hand, reading positive reviews, getting feedback from readers who get what I’m trying to do and appreciate it, that’s the reward.

That’s what makes it all worthwhile. AB: Everyone has a favorite, and mine (out of what I have read of your work so far) is Population Zero. Do you mind telling me a little about what drove you to write this story? Wrath: I had the idea for Population Zero floating around in my head for years. When I was twenty, I wrote an epic poem titled “Mass-Murderers For The Preservation of Animal Life.” That was actually the working title for Population Zero. The original poem ended with the line “No life is precious, until all life is precious.” I began with that concept and made that the motivation for the main character. The rest of the story flowed easily from there.

AB: Speaking of favorites, do you have a favorite piece out of your own writing? If so, what makes it a favorite? Wrath: My favorite short story is still “He Who Increases Knowledge.” I just think I blended everything well in that story. It’s funny, creepy, and says everything I wanted to say. My favorite novel is easily Yaccub’s Curse. I packed my entire philosophy of life into that novel and somehow did it without sacrificing good storytelling, characterization, or action.

It’s also pretty extreme. AB: What are you reading right now? Who do you typically like to read? Wrath: I’m currently reading The Wasp Factory. It was given to me as a birthday present.

I’m also reading Gone Girl in ebook format. I read a lot of True Crime, horror, thrillers, and philosophy.

I also read scientific journals and I recently got into Psychology Today. I bought one when I was getting on a plane last year, which is usually when I buy Nova or Scientific American. I bought it on a whim and loved it.

Been hooked ever since. I don’t really have a favorite author.

I’ll try anyone if they’re writing what I like to read. AB: I’m curious to know how your partnership with Maurice Broaddus worked when co-writing Orgy of Souls. (For those who don’t know, you both have very different belief systems.) What drove you to combine your talents, and do you think your difference in beliefs made the collaboration more difficult, or more rewarding? Also, you’ve co-written with quite a few books, how does that process work?

Wrath: I used to spend a lot of time on Maurice’s now defunct messageboard, arguing with him and the other religious folks on his board. I really enjoyed the discussions, and I owe them a debt for helping me sharpen my intellectual sword. A lot of the ideas I put into my novels and my blog, came from arguments with Maurice, so it made sense for us to collaborate. I was surprised by how effortless it was.

We have such different styles, but we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, so we play to those strengths. I let him write all the emotional scenes and I handled the gore. In most collaborations, we write in blocks of 3,000 to 5,000 words. One person writes a block of words then passes it along. We just keep passing it back and forth until it’s finished and there’s no restriction on where we place our next block. I can decide to write my 3,000 word block right smack in the middle of what my collaborator wrote or vice versa.

Maybe I think what my collaborator wrote needs more of a setup, so I’ll go back and write my next block before what he or she wrote. Then, when it comes time to edit and rewrite, we both have the freedom to edit and rewrite each other’s work.

That’s how we are able to make the work flow so seamlessly. There are times when I have written a chapter and Maurice has gone in and just added a few sentences here and there in the chapter I wrote and I do the same to his. It takes a lot of trust to make that work. AB: Can you tell us a little about Prey Drive, and when you expect it to be released and in what format?

Do you have anything else in the works for readers to look forward to? Wrath: Prey Drive picks up where Succulent Prey left off, with Joseph Miles in prison. He still has his hunger for human flesh and now he’s trying to get out, He gets some help from various other characters and there are some truly gruesome scenes of cannibalism and some titillating sex scenes. As I said, it picks up right where Succulent Prey left off. I also have a novella coming out from Sinister Grin Press called “Voracious.” It’s about a genetic weightloss treatment that involves cross-species genetic manipulation. The result is a genetic retro-virus that makes people burn calories faster than they can possibly replace them. They become these emaciated, ravenous, animals.

I think readers are going to love this one. AB: KillerCon 4 is almost here—September 20st-23th!

What inspired the creation of this convention and what can attendants expect. Where can tickets be purchased? Wrath: KillerCon came about because I wanted a horror convention in Vegas and no one else would do it. Trust me, I did not want to be the one to do it, but everyone else was scared of Vegas, so I had no choice. Now, I’m glad I did.

It’s been amazing. This year, we have Kelley Armstrong, William Nolan, F.

Paul Wilson, Jack Ketchum, Don D’Auria, and Mignon Fogherty as Guests of Honor along with Special Guest, Brian Keene. As usual, we have parties every night, readings, author Q&As, panels on the business and craft of writing, three writing contests, and a dealer’s room packed with books and other goodies. We also have Pat McEwan doing an alien autopsy. We have Mike McCarty doing live zombie special effects make-up. We have two writing workshops led by “Grammar Girl” Mignon Fogherty and R.J. Cavendar of The Editorial Department.
