CES 2003: SanDisk has today introduced a combined WiFi (802.11b) and flash memory Compact Flash and Secure Digital cards. The 'Connect' product line starts with a 128 MB & WiFi Compact Flash card and a 256 MB & WiFi Secure Digital Card. Obviously at first these products will be aimed at the PDA market but it would be interesting to see if any camera manufacturers take advantage of this technology. Press Release: SanDisk Introduces World's First Cards Combining Flash Memory and Wireless Communications New SanDisk CompactFlash and SD Connect Product Line Includes Single Function Cards With Wi-Fi Connectivity SanDisk Corporation (Nasdaq:SNDK) today introduced a line of wireless Wi-Fi (802.11b) cards with the world's first card products to include both memory and wireless communications technology. The new SanDisk Connect(TM) product line was introduced at a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show where SanDisk is demonstrating products in Central Hall, booth 7949. The announcement marks SanDisk's entry into the wireless communications market and comes at a time when Wi-Fi, also known as WLAN for wireless local area networks, is emerging as the main worldwide wireless standard.

Market watchers at Gartner Inc. Report that some two million mobile surfers in North America already use Wi-Fi, and it expects that number to double by next year. The Connect product line includes four products - dual-function 128 megabyte (MB) CompactFlash(R)(CF) and 256MB SD cards that combine Wi-Fi and flash memory as well as single-function CF and SD cards with Wi-Fi connectivity. SanDisk plans to add 256MB cards to the CF Connect product line by the middle of 2003. Nelson Chan, SanDisk senior vice president and general manager of SanDisk's retail business unit, said, 'Access points that allow mobile computer users to wirelessly connect to their email and the Internet are rapidly being deployed around the world - from hotels, airports and universities to cafes, coffee shops and corporate campuses. With these new SanDisk Connect cards, people on the go can quickly transmit and receive data, images and music from any of those thousands of locations.'

He added, 'The cards bring wireless connectivity to a host of new products including handheld and notebook computers, digital cameras and MP3 players. By combining both flash memory and wireless communications in one card, people going on a business or pleasure trip can load up the card with family pictures, data files, spread sheets and Power Point presentations and have everything they need, plus wireless connectivity, on one card. This is becoming quite important to consumers and business users because many handheld and notebook computers have only one card slot and users are forced to decide between using the slot for connectivity or for storage. These SanDisk Connect cards solve that problem.' The new Connect cards also allow users to download files to their mobile computers while connected to their email or the Internet. Today, computer owners sometimes cannot download files to their systems because the main memory in the computer is already full.

With a Connect card plugged in, they can download their files to that cards if main memory is no longer available. Will Strauss, president of Forward Concepts, a Phoenix-based market research firm, said, 'It's clear that the WLAN market growth is truly phenomenal, with 802.11 network interface card shipments growing over 100 percent in 2002 to 13.2 million from 6.4 million in 2001. We forecast that 138.7 million of these network interface cards will ship in 2006 for a compound annual growth rate of 85 percent from 2001. The mobility that WLAN provides ties in well with the compelling need for portable data storage, which makes the SanDisk Connect products very compelling.' SanDisk expects that consumers will use the new Connect combination cards in various ways.

For example, several camera manufacturers are exploring the development of new digital cameras (with single card slots) that would enable photographers to use a Connect dual-function card to take pictures and then use wireless connectivity to send the images to friends or business associates. 'SanDisk's introduction of a dual-function SDIO card combining Wi-Fi with flash memory opens new expansion options for customers using SDIO Now! Enabled devices,' said Kent Hellebust, senior vice president, marketing and product management, BSQUARE Corp. 'With Microsoft and leading OEM's adopting SDIO Now! As the industry standard for PocketPC-based IO expansion, SanDisk's SDIO cards are a welcome addition to the growing peripheral expansion market.' SanDisk's SD Wi-Fi cards also will support devices with Palm's OS 4x and higher operating systems. Combining flash memory and Wi-Fi in one card also represents a cost savings to consumers because if the cards were bought separately, they would cost considerably more.

Devices enabled with Wi-Fi cards, such as SanDisk's Connect cards, can transmit and receive data at speeds up to 11Mbps (megabits per second) at a realistic range of up to 300 feet from the nearest access point. SanDisk's Wi-Fi cards have one of the fastest data transfer rates in the industry. SanDisk's new Connect cards have been designed with low power consumption to minimize battery drain, a key consideration for PDA and notebook users. The CF Connect line can be used in multiple devices because they support both WinCE PDAs and Windows laptops and notebooks. The cards also have been simplified for easy installation, and security encryption keys are included with the products. The Wi-Fi (802.11b) CF and SD Connect cards have a suggested retail price of $99.95.

The dual-function CF cards with 128MB of capacity will be priced at $129.95 while the dual-function 256MB SD cards will be priced at $149.95. The CF Wi-Fi card is available now, the CF dual-function card and the SD Wi-Fi card will be available in March and the SD dual-function card is expected to ship at mid-year. The CF pricing includes a PC card adapter for notebook and laptop owners. SanDisk Connect cards will be sold in many of the 50,000 retail stores worldwide where SanDisk branded products are sold.

Hello im desperately looking for someone with the expertise to develop a.dll and registry settings that will enable wifi card use on The MDA Compact II (or HTC Charmer). go to page 2/3 for solution It looks like T-mobile have developed the rom for this phone to stop any wifi SDIO Cards from working! They have missed out certain.dll files that link the driver software to the card reader. This is obviously their attempt to force people to use GPRS rather than using wifi.

Sdio Card Wi-fi I-mate

This is annoying since i was planning to use wifi and T-mobile dont say anything about this in the product details, in fact the device is described as fully SDIO compatible! Im told the main file missing is called HSDCard.dll (not case sensitive) Also missing are the registry settings in HKEYLOCALMACHINE Drivers SDCARD HostController xxx xxx I really hope that someone can help me and the many other people out there buying wifi cards for this ppc, only to find them secretly barred! Aparently the cpu and SD card reader on the Compact II are the same as the HTC Prophet so maybe files from a prophet might work.

I know this is alot to ask but im really fed up with this, I tried four different cards before finding out about T-Mobiles secret wifi blocking, and now it seems like it is impossible without help to hack the device from you guys. I am willing to try and rom's that might work and even prepared to dissasemble the device (and get my soldering iron out) if nessisary.

Any ideas at all will greatfully accepted. Thanks in advance fUNKUS PS: Heres links to other forums where i am researching this issue: 1. The prophet roms work on the charmer so its possible to upload the unbranded Dopod 818 Pro OS portion onto the phone.

You'll be left with no tmobile tinkering whatsoever and hopefully a fully function SDIO OS. I dont have wifi sdio card to check this out though.

Sd Card Wi-fi

Only 1 minus so far ive found is the prophets camera is different so the stuff to run the charmer camera isnt present. I got a complete registry and file dump from the charmer so would have all settings and files needed to solve that hopefully. Look in uploads and the prophet folder on the xda FTP to download the dopod 818 pro rom. Then you can use aWizard to upload the OS portion from that zip onto the phone. Im trying the process now.verry worried hehe i bet you anything i wont be able to make phone calls tomorrow. I have a comm manager.and a few errors.but still!trying the sdio wifi (obviously!) OK.

I have a connection manager, and a few other new things. But i didnt hard reset before putting the new os in rom so i have spbpocket ect popping up with errors every 5 seconds lol.

I am sceptical to be honest, im still getting errors on startup even after hard reset and storage empty and the card still doesnt work. As before it sometimes recognises it with the icon but it wont connect to wifi in the comm manager.i dont know where to go from here really. Im going to try to replace the rom with the origional from t-mobile, just to check that im not stuck here hehe, Then tomorrow ill copy the root of each device over to my pc, then sort throught the differences in files and registry keys.

With the two different installations and registries on my pc, side by side, maybe i can find out exactly what t-mobile have removed and add it to the standard t-mobile rom installation, as origionally planned. Thus keeping camera and other errors from occuring.we already have 1 problem hehe Can you look into getting the camera working?ie find out what files the t-mobile rom has and reg keys ect, Either that or we should do the above process to mod the origional rom.

QUICK THOUGHT: the dopod 818 pro has built in wifi.this may give us further problems 7 am here now and verry tired hehe, quick nap for funk but ill be keep trying this out and post any sucess or near sucess hehe I'd love to email t-mobile a working rom update for the MDA Compact II.hehehe.would say alot:shock. I used this program off buzzdev to get a dump or all the windows rom files and exported out the registry aswell. Did a hard reset with the charmer rom minus customization, did a dump then installed the prophet rom, hard reset, stopped customization and did a dump.

So now using Beyond Compare 2, can see exactly what files are a different size or what files each rom has the other one doesnt. The camera does indeed use a different library and registry setting. So far i have only just changed that over, starting the camera, it goes to switch to landscape but then quits out and changes back to portrait, so a bit more than before. Just a reg problem with that now i think since ive copied all the relevant files over needed. My prophet rom is flawless, i get no errors what so ever. I did hard reset mine before with the charmer rom and then again after installing the prophet one so it was completely fresh and it works fine, (besides camera) I'll see about uploading the files dump to the ftp so you can just download them to look for yourself.

Using the file dumper takes over a hour to do for one device!
